Internet Predators - Eye on the Child - Who is keeping an Eye on the Child?

The internet is an amazing source of information and learning aid but it is infested with dangers, inappropriate content and sick, vindictive predators. Parents need, nowadays, to employ a full-time guard to watch over their children whilst they are on the net. No, I am not suggesting that the parents need to spy on children but they need to be aware of the sites children visit and, more especially, who they talk to in chat-rooms. The internet has not only become our primary source for reference material, but also the place where we connect and communicate with many of our friends. Parents need to teach children about the dangers of the internet, in fact many parents need to learn about the dangers too, since many have not had enough exposure to cyber technology to be aware of the threats lurking out there. Parents need to surf the web, go to chat-rooms and join social media sites to familiarize themselves with some of the unsavory characters and content, for their own safety as well as that of the children. Some sites will ask for very personal details in order to access them and it is through accessing those details that predators will strike.

Although there are many programmes one can install to safeguard against some of the dangers, it is also of paramount importance that there is an open channel of communication between parent and child. The child should have the confidence to speak out when they encounter an irregularity on the net and receive the support of the parent – not be made to feel like they are the perpetrator. Parents, remember the child is the victim. The internet has become such an integral part of our
that it is impossible not to use it.
